About Junior Riding Lessons

Twin Oaks offers special 30-minute horseback riding lessons for riders ages 6 through 9. Classes are limited to 3 riders. Each class is taught by one instructor and one assistant instructor, so riders get plenty of one-on-one attention. Riders learn riding basics like position, control and steering. Students will learn to walk and trot. These classes prepare young riders for our 1-hour group lessons when they are older.

Registering

Please call Nancy to find a lesson opening that works for your schedule (703-723-3200), and then fill out the lesson registration form and mail it to the address on the form.

Schedule

Classes are 30 minutes long, and your child's spot in a class will depend on availability and your child's level:

  • Monday
    • 4:30pm - 5:00pm
    • 5:00pm - 5:30pm

Pricing

Junior Rider Lessons are sold in packages of eight 30-minute lessons for $310, and we give you 9 weeks to get them all in.

This means you can miss up to 1 lesson each 9 week period. There's never any need to hassle with make-ups or credits.

Safety Equipment

We require our students to wear an ASTM approved hard hat (helmet) at all times on the horse. We also have a selection of "loaner" hard hats that you can wear for your first few lessons until you can get your own. Furthermore, we recommend that you wear standard riding pants and paddock boots. Paddock boots are short, lace-up boots. As with helmets, we have extra paddock boots in our tack room that you can borrow until you purchase your own.

To purchase your own riding equipment, we recommend Dover Saddlery on Rt. 50. Their address is: 43717 John Mosby Highway, Chantilly, VA 20152. Phone: 703-327-4423.

Dover carries a full line of helmets, paddock boots and riding pants. The boots we prefer are Ovation Children's paddock boots (lace-up) for $54.70, or Devonaire paddock boots (lace-up), $39.90. The adult paddock boots we prefer are Ovation for $64.70 or Grand Prix (lace-ups) for $149. Any kind of helmet is fine as long as it is ASTM approved and fits correctly and snug.

Riding pants are also available at Dover. We suggest an inexpensive pair of breeches, jodphurs, or schooling tights. The Dover staff can help you select a pair that is appropriate for your boots. Half-chaps are also nice. They wrap around your calf and give extra protection and support. The Dover Barnstable half-chap is reasonable.
