About Young Rider Camps
Twin Oaks offers week-long summer day camps during the summer momnths. During the school year, Twin Oaks offers Saturday Young Rider Camps for children who have seldom ridden and are looking for an introduction to riding basics, horse care, and responsibility taught in a safe and fun environment.
Saturday Young Rider Camps
Saturday Young Rider Camps are held on the dates listed above. Riders ages 5 - 12 may register
for as many of these dates as they want. Registration is confirmed when the registeration form and check are received by Twin Oaks. See the "Camp Activities" section below to learn
what riders do at our Saturday camps.
Summer and Spring Break Week-Long Camps
Riders ages 5 - 14 will come to the stables for 5 days (Monday through Friday) to learn what it's like to own and ride your own horse. The cost is $199.00. See below for a list of activities. Riders will ride every day and learn basic position on the horse, including steering and control. Riders will also groom and care for the horses each day while learning to be safe around the barn.
Equestrian Camp
We offer two equestrian camps to accommodate riders with differing levels of experience:
Equestrian Camp for Experienced Riders (ages 8-16)
This camp is for riders who can ride the posting trot and maintain control and steering of the horse. Campers will receive a 1 hour lesson each day and learn care of the horses. Please call or email Nancy if you have questions about your child's riding level.
Equestrian Camp for Beginner Riders (ages 10-16)
This camp is for riders who are new to riding and are ready to ride 1 hour each day and learn to care for horses.
Riders with experience and beginner riders who register for this camp will attend this camp together, however riders will be divided according to their level of riding and experience for the 1 hour riding lesson. You may call Nancy before registering for this camp if you have questions.
Camp Activities
Each rider learns basic horse care skills, such as grooming, hoof cleaning, tack care, barn chores, and how to maintain the well being of horses. Each child will ride every day and they will receive individual attention while riding. The emphasis of this camp is on safety and respect for the horse and his care. Since the campers are young, the riding is taught by an experienced instructor with riders on the horse one at a time. The instructor stays with the child while on the horse and helps them maintain proper position while guiding the horse. Campers are organized into groups of 5 and rotate through four 30 minute stations:
- Grooming
- Riding
- Horse chores
- Craft activity teaching horse care
Equipment
Camp participants will please wear the following:
- Long pants
- Sturdy boots (or sneakers)
- Riding helmet
Riding helmets can be purcahsed at Dover Saddlery. Riding helmets are made by Troxel. Riders may borrow a helmet from Twin Oaks if they don't have one. Bike helmets are not permitted.
